Students will be using self awareness charts to identify terms that they are familiar with by using a the symbols "+" next to a word they know and are confident about their understanding of the term, "o" for those terms that they have heard before but are not quite sure of the definition, and "-" for those terms that are completely foreign to them. They will be expected to complete the chart of terms to the best of their ability before the start of the lesson. When certain terms appear and are discussed the students will take notes of the definition and mathematical examples of how each term functions in the mathematical world. This strategy works as an assessment tool to determine each student's prior knowledge of the curriculum. As Frey and Fisher (2012) stated teaching vocabulary becomes complicated when the varying knowledge levels of the students are present.
